Cranleigh 0 Chesworth Rovers 4
The second league game of the season at Snoxhall pitches in Cranleigh started on a bright and sunny morning, with early dew quickly burning off. The boys were determined to settle some unfinished business from the previous friendly match.
The first game started with immediate pressure from the opposition taking it close to a Cranleigh lead, however good defending from James and Seb quickly put Chesworth on the attack. Cody made a strong run up the wing to have a strike which was well saved by the Cranleigh keeper. A hand ball in the goal area allowed a free kick for Chesworth in the box which Max finished well for the Rovers to take an early lead.
Pressure was maintained by Cranleigh throughout the first half, but the Chesworth team produced some fantastic passes. An excellent cross by Christian was then finished by Max to ensure a second goal for the striker. Chesworth maintained their focus with a corner taken by Seb resulting in a header into the goal by Christian. This ensured a 0-3 lead for Chesworth at half time.
The second half started with the same pace and enthusiasm, Conner coming on in place of Cody. In the first few minutes Cranleigh were close to scoring but Thomas was focused and deflected the ball on a number of occasions. The Chesworth boys then lept to the challenge and battled down the pitch with some focused passing. A Chesworth corner was taken by Max, headed by Daniel and crossed to James, who was in the perfect position to have a strike on target. Cranleigh fought hard in the last few minutes, having some last attempts on goal, which were again well saved by Thomas and the defensive line before the match finished.
Man of the Match – Max
Cranleigh 0 – 2 Chesworth Rovers
The second game of the morning started with early pressure from Cranleigh. However from an early save by Sam, a good run up the pitch was made by Dion and Patrick. Patrick has a go at taking an early lead but was stopped by the Cranleigh keeper. The Chesworth team maintained their focus with some good passing in the goal area between Patrick and Scott. Scott saw an early opportunity but it was narrowly saved by the Cranleigh keeper. Harrison picked up the ball from mid pitch and with the help of Tommy, who delivered a cross to Scott in the box, who drove it to the top corner over the head of the Cranleigh keeper to take an early lead.
Cranleigh responded to the lead quickly, but some focused defending by Harrison and Dion took the ball back to the midfield to Callum and Patrick. There were numerous attempts on the Cranleigh goal by Callum and Tommy, with both players working hard to try and increase the Chesworth lead.
A half time substitute was made by Chesworth with Kieron coming on in place of Dion. Tommy showed determination to take the Chesworth lead further ahead with another strike after good team work. The boys worked hard to prevent the opposition equalising, and it was Scott who delivered a pinpoint cross to Callum who hit a beauty for the Rovers to go into a 0-2 lead. Cranleigh battled hard but were unable to secure a goal despite a good attempt. The match finished with strong work by the opposition who were unable to defeat the organised defence.
The morning concluded as a double victory with both teams showing great determination.

Three Bridges 1 - 2 Chesworth Rovers
The first league game of the season away to Three Bridges was eagerly anticipated as both league games between these teams last season had been closely contested. Three Bridges started strongly and had several early shots at the Chesworth goal going just wide and also being saved by Thomas. Chesworth replied with good runs from Cody and Christian from midfield and shots from both of them saved by the keeper. The pressure finally paid off with the ball being passed from Christian to Max who scored. Three Bridges responded immediately with shot after shot at the Chesworth goal, saves by Thomas and James keeping Chesworth in front. Finally however the pressure was too much and Three Bridges scored. Thereafter both sides had chances with possession in the midfield being closely fought for and some good passing between Daniel, Cody, Christian and Max. At the back Seb and James and Thomas in goal defended well denying Three Bridges again and again. The second Chesworth goal came just before half time from Christian and then Thomas immediately had to make a save to stop Three Bridges equalising. The half time score was 1-2.
The second half started as lively as the first with both teams making good runs and having shots at the opposition goals. There was pressure from both teams. Daniel and Christian both had chances as did Three Bridges but to no avail. Scott came on for Max. The Chesworth defence of Seb and James held fast in the final onslaught from Three Bridges to get the equaliser but the final score remained 1-2 to Chesworth. A tough game but a well deserved win.
Man of the Match – Thomas
Three Bridges 4 – 3 Chesworth Rovers
The second game of the morning started with early pressure from Three Bridges. Harrison in goal made some good saves. Chesworth responded and also put the Three Bridges goalkeeper under pressure in particular from Scott. Unfortunately however the Three Bridges pressure finally paid off with them scoring 2 goals in quick succession. Rather than Chesworth heads going down however they responded and fought hard in the midfield passing to Scott who made some good runs and forced the Three Bridges goalkeeper to defend his goal. As with the first game the action was end to end with both keepers being kept busy. Harrison made some good saves in the Chesworth goal. Chesworth had chances to score with a long shot from Dion which very nearly went in and from Scott. The pressure finally paid off and Scott scored from a lovely pass through from Connor. Three Bridges responded and won a free kick but good defending from Kieran and Dion kept the ball away from the Chesworth goal. At the other end Connor, Scott, Tommy and Callum were all involved in front of the Three Bridges goal but good defending kept the ball out. Connor and Scott had numerous shots saved by the keeper. The Chesworth equaliser came from a weaving run by Scott whose shot was saved by the keeper only to rebound to Connor who slotted the ball home for a goal. From the restart Three Bridges again exerted pressure on the Chesworth goal firing in shot after shot, the goal ably defended by Kieran and Dion and Harrison. Scott and Connor had chances at the other end but at half time the score was 2-2
Three Bridges stared the second half with pace and almost immediately scored a goal putting them back in front. The pressure from them continued but the Chesworth defence held fast. Max was substituted for Scott and was immediately involved linking up with Connor to allow him to score his second of the day and Chesworth’s third. As anticipated Three Bridges came back at Chesworth immediately seeking the goal to put them back in front. They had several shots just wide of goal and then a lucky shot which gave them their fourth goal. Chesworth continued to battle at both ends, defending their own goal and shooting at the Three Bridges goal. There was good passing and blistering runs from Chesworth resulting in Connor Max and Callum all having shots at the Three Bridges goal. They never gave up trying to get that further goal and the last move of the game saw Max and Connor linking up for Connor to have a final shot at goal, saved by the keeper. Unfortunately it was not to be and the final score was 4-3 to Three Bridges.
Both matches were hard fought and could have gone either way. Both teams played well although Chesworth were felt to have been a little unlucky in the second game.

Chesworth Rovers 0 - 2 Cranleigh
Two weeks before their league meeting, Rovers and Cranleigh met at Snoxhall Field for a competitive friendly that allowed the Chesworth coaches to try a number of players in different positions and formations. The opening game featured most of the starting seven for the Reds and they struggled against a committed and determined Cranleigh team often being pegged back in defence where Seb Ellis and James Marsh were overworked protecting Thomas Edevane in the Rovers goal
Cranleigh were generally on top in midfield where changes in personnel affected Rovers usual passing game. As a consequence the forward line of Max Laker, Cody Gibbs and Christian Burgess never really got going. An injury to Burgess clearly had an effect on his mobility and Laker became somewhat isolated. Cranleigh were awarded a penalty for a careless handball after fifteen minutes and duly scored to lead one nil at the break.
The Rovers team was altered considerably for the second half with Connor Brown, and Scott Sauders coming on for Burgess and Laker. Callum Osborn replaced Dan Christer in the middle of the park. The general play improved although the coaches must have been concerned that some players struggled in unfamiliar positions. In the final minutes Cranleigh took complete control, adding a second for a comfortable win.

Chesworth Rovers 4 - 1 Cranleigh
The experimentation continued in the follow up match with Laker playing full back, Burgess playing in a more central striking role and Dion Clouden playing in midfield and initially Rovers struggled going a goal down after just five minutes. The introduction of Dan Christer into midfield changed the pattern of the game as Rovers began to pass the ball better and make chances. Kieran Kirby scored from close range after good work on the right from Gibbs and the same combination worked well in reverse shortly afterwards to give Rovers a narrow lead at the half way point.
Rovers settled into their stride well in the second period with Saunders upfront where his pace clearly unsettled the defence. The third goal was the best of the game with James Marsh moving the ball with pace to Dan Christer who put Burgess away on the left. He drew the Cranleigh keeper and then beat him with a sweet left foot shot at his near post. Within a minute it was 4-1 as the battling Clouden won the ball on the right moving it to Christer who then hit an inch perfect pass through the defence for Scott Saunders to run onto and scuff a shot past the dejected keeper.
The management used these games as a training exercise to find out more about their players so not too much can be read into the results. It is likely that Chesworth Rovers will field very different teams for their next visit to Snoxall Field in two weeks time.
